- Respect for Human Life
- Both design and nursing are sciences targeted at human-beings.
Our philosophy is based on respect for human life.
- Contributing to the Community
- SCU aims to be a university that is open to, is of help to, and is the pride of the citizens.
Our mission is to serve the community through teaching, research and public service.
Educational Characteristics
- Collaboration of Design and Nursing
- The faculties of design and nursing carry out joint research on method of applying design to the fields of public health, medical care and social welfare, and also collaborate in the teaching of these methods.
- Broad Network
- By cooperating with citizens, industry and the public sector, SCU provides education and carries out research aimed at solving regional problems.
Educational Aims
- Development of Human Resources to Cope with Technical Innovation
- SCU nurtures professionals capable of working in specialized fields of design and nursing, which continue to make remarkable advances.
- Construction of a Base for “Knowledge and Creativity”
- SCU contributes to the promotion of art and culture, the development of industry and innovations in urban systems and landscapes.
We also contribute to the fostering of public health maintenance, and health promotion, through the improvement of community nursing and health- care.
History
- April 1965
- Sapporo Nursing School established.
- April 1991
- Sapporo School of the Arts established.
- April 1996
- Advanced Design Course Program and Sapporo Institute of the Arts established at Sapporo School of the Arts.
- November 2001
- Working party set up to consider the establishment of a new university through integration of Sapporo Nursing School and Sapporo School of the Arts.
- December 2002
- Working party submits a proposal for promotion of the two schools to the status of a university.
- September 2003
- Basic concept of Sapporo City University conceived.
- November 2003
- Preparatory committee for the establishment of Sapporo City University established.
- July 2004
- Basic plan for Sapporo City University formulated.
- December 2005
- Establishment of Sapporo City University approved.
- March 2006
- Foundation of Public University Corporation Sapporo City University approved.
- April 2006
- Sapporo City University established.
- June 2008
- Basic plan for Graduate School of Sapporo City University formulated.
- October 2009
- Establishment of Graduate School of Sapporo City University approved.
- December 2009
- Establishment of Graduate Program in Midwifery, Sapporo City University approved.
- April 2010
- Graduate School of Design (Master Program), Graduate School of Nursing (Master Program) and Graduate Program for Midwifery established.
- October 2011
- Establishment of Graduate School of Sapporo City University (Doctor Program) approved.
- April 2012
- Graduate School of Design (Doctor Program), Graduate School of Nursing (Doctor Program) established.

Public Transportation
For those using public transportation from JR Sapporo Station:
From JR Sapporo Station, take the Subway Namboku Line towards Makomanai (approximately 17 minutes). Alight at Makomanai Station, then take the Chuo Bus from boarding point No. 2 (approximately 12 minutes). Get off at “Sapporo Shiritsu Daigaku Mae”. From there, it is a 3-minute walk.

From JR Sapporo Station, take the JR Hakodate Line towards Otaru, or take the JR Gakuen-Toshi Line (approximately 3 minutes) and alight at JR Soen Station. From there, it is a 3-minute walk.
